Intermediate Handstand Workshop w/ Dr.Chris Gatti

This intermediate-level workshop explores topics beyond the basics of a standard straight handstand that will challenge both the body and mind. The exact topics will depend on the level of the individuals but typical topics include:

  • Body position refinement
  • Enhancing balance proficiency
  • Press handstands
  • One-arm handstand beginnings (depending on ability levels)
A variety of drills progressions will be explained, demonstrated, and practiced so that individuals can continue to train at their level and to progress on their own. Prerequisites: Participants should have the ability to hold a freestanding (no wall, no spot) handstand for 20-30 seconds with their legs together and straight, as this is indicative of a good level of body control and comfort in balance.

Chris Gatti was a competitive gymnast through college, and then went on to years of graduate school and research. Upon completing his PhD, he ran away with Cirque du Soleil, first performing in South America on the show Corteo and later becoming head coach on the show Volta. He currently does a variety of circus-related activities, including coaching, research, and consulting. His passion however, is handbalancing: training and teaching handstands. He is a self-taught handbalancer and his style of teaching has been called unique, liberal, sneaky, and Socratic. His teaching goal is to convey his philosophy of handbalancing and the experience of handstanding, much beyond the simple concept of being upside-down.
